Gaza, June 10, 2025: A violent incident near an aid distribution center in Gaza’s Tal al-Sultan area of Rafah has left six dead and 99 injured, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry. On Monday, June 9, 2025, Palestinians reported that local gunmen, allegedly operating near Israeli military positions, and Israeli forces opened fire on civilians gathered to collect humanitarian aid from a site run by the U.S.- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF).

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with masked Palestinian gunmen in civilian clothing shooting at people organizing queues for food and supplies. Hisham Saeed Salem told BBC Arabic that the gunmen fired indiscriminately, targeting even those who had secured aid boxes. Mohammed Sakout, another witness, recounted seeing several young men killed nearby. The proximity of the gunmen to Israeli-controlled areas raised suspicions of coordination, though no evidence has been confirmed.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said they are investigating the reports. The GHF, which uses U.S. private security contractors, claimed its Tal al-Sultan site was closed that day due to crowd chaos, with no incidents at its active Rafah and Wadi Gaza locations. The GHF’s system, requiring Palestinians to pass through Israeli-controlled zones for aid, has drawn criticism from the United Nations and aid groups for endangering civilians and violating humanitarian principles.
